Not sure how urgent it is?

Is this an emergency?

Three quick questions. This is general guidance, not medical advice — when in doubt, call us or 911.

What’s going on?
Is there swelling that makes it hard to breathe, swallow or open your mouth?
Do you have a fever, or is the pain keeping you up at night?

Answer the three questions, or read all four answers.

Go to the ER or call 911 now

When: Swelling that makes it hard to breathe, swallow or open your mouth — or a jaw injury from a fall or accident.

  • Don’t wait for a dental appointment. This can be a spreading infection.
  • After the ER, call us — we’ll see you for the tooth itself.

Come in now — call us on the way

When: A knocked-out adult tooth. The first 30–60 minutes matter most.

  • Pick it up by the crown, not the root. Rinse gently, don’t scrub.
  • Put it back in the socket if you can, or in a cup of milk.
  • Call (512) 555-0142 so we’re ready when you arrive.

Come in today

When: Pain that keeps you up, a fever, swelling of the gum, a broken tooth with pain, or bleeding that won’t stop after 30 minutes of pressure.

  • Ibuprofen or acetaminophen as the label says — no aspirin on the gum.
  • A cold pack on the cheek, 15 minutes on, 15 off.
  • Bite on folded gauze for bleeding.

Can usually wait until tomorrow

When: A crown or filling came out, or a small chip — with no pain and no swelling.

  • Keep the crown in a bag and bring it — we can often re-cement it.
  • Dental wax or sugar-free gum over a sharp edge.
  • Chew on the other side.

Questions people ask

What if it happens when you’re closed?

Call our number — the message gives a dentist’s on-call line for patients of record. For facial swelling that affects breathing or swallowing, go to the nearest ER or call 911.

A tooth got knocked out. What do I do?

Pick it up by the crown, not the root. Rinse it gently, don’t scrub. Put it back in the socket if you can, or in a cup of milk, and come in within 30–60 minutes — time matters most.

Will you see me if I’m not a patient?

Yes. Emergency visits are open to everyone.
